Contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that cause intense burning and swelling of mouth, tongue, and throat. Can cause difficulty breathing and swallowing.
Symptoms are immediate - within seconds to minutes of biting into the plant
Intense oral pain, drooling, pawing at mouth, vomiting, difficulty swallowing, swollen tongue
Remove plant material immediately. Rinse mouth thoroughly with water. Offer milk or yogurt to soothe. Call vet immediately.
Excessive drooling, pawing at mouth, difficulty breathing or swallowing, swollen tongue or throat
Emergency care required. May need pain medication, anti-inflammatories, and monitoring for airway obstruction.
