Red Maple

What Happens

Red maple leaves are highly toxic causing severe anemia (Heinz body anemia), methemoglobinemia, and organ damage. Even small amounts can be fatal. Brown, wilted leaves are MORE toxic than fresh green leaves.

Timeline

Symptoms can begin within 18-24 hours but may take up to 3 days

Severe anemia, dark urine, pale gums, weakness, rapid breathing, depression, increased heart rate, death

Do This Right Now

EMERGENCY - Call vet immediately if ingestion suspected. Do not wait for symptoms. Time is critical.

When to Worry

Dark brown urine, pale or yellow gums, weakness, rapid breathing, lethargy, loss of appetite - all are emergencies

Vet Consultation

Immediate emergency care required. May need blood transfusions, oxygen therapy, IV fluids. Prognosis poor if treatment delayed.
